Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espírito Santo has confirmed that Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi will be available for selection against Newcastle United on Sunday, wearing a protective mask.
Awoniyi suffered a concussion and a broken nose after a collision during Forest’s FA Cup victory on penalties against Exeter City. As a result, he missed last weekend’s 2-0 Premier League defeat to Fulham.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Friday, Nuno assured reporters that Awoniyi had cleared concussion protocols and was ready to return.
“Yes, yes, it is clear on the concussion protocol. So, he is available. He will have to wear a mask, but he is a available,” the Portuguese coach stated.
Nuno further explained that the protective mask is necessary to safeguard Awoniyi’s nose injury and that the striker is in the process of adjusting to it. “He is trying to get used to it,” he added.
Awoniyi has endured a challenging season, struggling to find form while Chris Wood continues to shine. The Nigerian international has netted just two goals in 22 appearances across all competitions this campaign.
Forest, currently competing for a place in the UEFA Champions League, will be hoping Awoniyi’s return adds firepower to their attack as they face a tough Newcastle.
