SuperSport United defender Ime Okon, a highly-rated talent admired by Danish champions FC Midtjylland, has announced his decision to represent South Africa’s Bafana Bafana over Nigeria, dealing a blow to the Super Eagles’ long-term defensive aspirations.
The 20-year-old center-back, born in Johannesburg to a Nigerian father and a South African mother, had the option to play for either country.
However, Okon revealed that his allegiance lies with South Africa, citing his upbringing and personal connection to the country.
In an interview with iDiski Times, Okon shared his thought process:
“I have Nigerian family, and they say I must make a choice that makes me happy. I grew up here [in South Africa], everything I know is South African. I can barely speak the native Nigerian language, but I know my roots. I’m proudly Nigerian, but also proudly South African.”
The defender emphasized that playing for Bafana Bafana has been a lifelong dream nurtured by his family, particularly his mother.
“Growing up, wearing a Bafana jersey was always the dream. It’s a big thing for my family. Playing for Bafana would be great.”
Okon, a product of the Matsatsantsa academy, broke into SuperSport United’s senior team in July 2023 under coach Gavin Hunt. His standout performances caught the attention of Bafana coach Hugo Broos, who included him in the preliminary squad for matches against Namibia and DR Congo in September 2023.
While Okon has yet to make his senior debut, he has been a consistent name in Bafana’s provisional squads.
In 2023, Okon underwent successful trials with FC Midtjylland, with the Danish side reportedly keeping tabs on his progress.
As the defender eyes further national team opportunities, South Africa will face South Sudan in a friendly on Tuesday, while Nigeria will clash with Rwanda on Monday in their final 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
Okon’s decision comes as a setback for Nigeria, who have lost a promising prospect, but it strengthens South Africa’s defensive ranks ahead of key tournaments, including the FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
