Super Eagles-eligible forward George Ilenikhena was the victim of a violent robbery on Saturday night in Monaco, according to reports from futbalgalore.
The 18-year-old, who plays for Ligue 1 club AS Monaco, was attacked by four armed assailants as he was leaving an event in the Corbeille-Essonnes area.
Ilenikhena, who recently joined Monaco from Royal Antwerp for a fee of over €18 million, has enjoyed a promising start to his career in France. The versatile striker has netted two goals and provided one assist in 14 appearances this season, including a memorable strike against Barcelona in the Champions League in September.
During the robbery, the attackers stole Ilenikhena’s phone, his Volkswagen Golf, and luxury shoes. The player later filed a report with local authorities, confirming the incident.
Monaco will be hoping the traumatic experience does not affect Ilenikhena’s mental state ahead of their return to competitive action this weekend. The club will be looking to bounce back and support their young star during this difficult time.
Ilenikhena, born in Lagos to Nigerian parents, moved to France at the age of three. Though he represented France at youth level, he has yet to commit to a senior international career.
As long as he does not feature for the French senior team in a competitive match, he remains eligible to play for Nigeria.
