Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Idah Peterside has reignited discussions on pressing issues surrounding Nigerian football, including tactical decisions, player dedication, and leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
In a recent radio interview, Peterside questioned the Super Eagles’ deployment of Alex Iwobi, suggesting the midfielder is being utilized inappropriately compared to his role at the club level.
“Iwobi is played in the middle in the Super Eagles, while at his club he plays from the wings,” Peterside told a radio station.
“It’s like we are taking the same eye to look at Iwobi as we did for ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha,” Peterside remarked. “ Iwobi may be ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha’s nephew, but ‘Jay Jay’ was in a different class, he was a GOAT.
Peterside also raised concerns about the commitment of foreign-born players to the national team, suggesting that those raised in Nigeria tend to show greater passion and understanding of what it means to play for the country.
In addition, Peterside advocated for former international players to take charge of the NFF, arguing that their firsthand experience in the sport makes them better suited to lead Nigerian football forward.
Peterside himself contested for the NFF presidency in 2022, demonstrating his commitment to reshaping football administration in the country.
His remarks have sparked fresh debates among fans and stakeholders, as Nigeria continues to navigate challenges in both its football governance and team performance.
