Finidi George: 7 things new Super Eagles Manager should address

The Nigeria Football Federation announced former Real Betis winger Finidi George as head coach of the Super Eagles on Monday.

Futbalgalore.com.ng reports that the soft spoken tactician assisted Jose Peseiro during the last Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire.

Finidi was temporarily in charge of the team during recent friendlies against Ghana and Mali.

The immediate task before the tactician will be steering Nigeria to the next FIFA World Cup.

The new Super Eagles manager should address the following 7 things:

  1. Team cohesion and chemistry: Building a strong team dynamic and fostering a sense of unity among the players. Sadiq Umar was a negative influence on the team in the last window. Issues like this should be adequately addressed by the new coach.
  2. Tactical approach: Developing a clear tactical strategy that suits the team’s strengths and addresses any weaknesses. The wing play of the team should be encouraged. That means giving more responsibilities to Simon Moses, Ademola Lookman and Samuel Chukwueze.
  3. Player development: Identifying and nurturing young talent while also helping established players improve their skills. The last U20 World Cup saw players like Daniel Daga and Benjamin Frederick perform for Nigeria. These youngsters should be integrated to the Super Eagles.
  4. Mental strength: Instilling a winning mentality and resilience in the players to perform under pressure. Games against Benin Republic and South Africa are crucial for the Super Eagles. Finidi should understand that securing maximum points is essential.
  5. Fitness and conditioning: Ensuring that the players are in peak physical condition to compete at the highest level.
  6. Communication and leadership: Establishing effective communication channels and fostering strong leadership within the team.
  7. Fans and media engagement: Building a positive relationship with the fans and media. These would create a supportive atmosphere for the team.
